Murree

Murree (Punjabi, Urdu: مری‎, marī, which means “apex”) is a hill resort town. It is situated within the Galyat region of the Pir Panjal range, that is inside the Rawalpindi District of Punjab, Pakistan. It forms the outskirts of the Islamabad-Rawalpindi metropolitan area, and is almost thirty kilometer (19 mi) northeast of Islamabad.

Construction of the city was started in 1851 on the Hill of Murree as a sanatorium for British troops. The permanent city of Murree was made in 1853 and the church was consecrated shortly thereafter. One highway was established, commonly said even in modern times, as the mall. Murree was the summer headquarters of the colonial Punjab Government till 1876 when it had been moved to Shimla.

Murree became a famous traveler station for British within British India, many prominent Englishmen were born here including Bruce Bairnsfather, Francis Younghusband and Reginald dyer. During colonial era access to industrial establishments was restricted for non-Europeans together with the Lawrence college. In 1901, the population of the city was formally 1,844, though if summer visitors had been included this could have been as high as 10,000.

Since the Independence of Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1947, Murree has retained its position as a famous hill station, noted for its pleasant summer. many tourists visit the city from the Islamabad-Rawalpindi area. The city also serves as a transit point for tourist’s visiting Azad Kashmir and Abbottabad. This city is famous for its Tudorbethan and neo-gothic architecture. The government of Pakistan owns a summer retreat in Murree, where foreign dignitaries as well as heads of state typically visit.

It is the most famous hill station of Pakistan, that lies 50 kilometers northeast of Pakistani capital Islamabad. it’s mountainous region, forming a part of outer Himalayas and it’s situated at a comfortable altitude of 7500 feet (2286 meters) within the Himalayan foothills at 33 54′ 30″ north latitude and 73 26 east longitude. This region contains four major supers that are gradually increasing. Murree city itself is located at highest among them and it’s 7500 feet high. Remaining include Patriata, Kuldana and Gharial. River Jehlum has bounded it by in the east, NWFP districts of Abbottabad and Heripur to the North and West, Islamabad Capital Territory to the Southwest and Kotli Sattian Tehsil (town) of Rawalpindi district to the South.
